The METABOOK presents a serial viewing of ten (hand) screen-printed plates produced in a four-colour separation process. The viewer is confronted with a humorous representation of universal Flags/Emblems, appropriating books from the artists’ collection as part of an ongoing series. A montage of reproductions of philosophy books, popular novels, science books, critical essays and catalogues. A cross-section of Mitrentses’ reading, the work alludes humorously to the mystique of a personal institution through a visual and conceptual transmissions from education to the symbols of believe systems. The conceptual use of book – having been used here as a direct structural material – connects inextricably with the Artist’s sense of the importance of questioning the transmission of knowledge and thought, through time/history. Also with her awareness of the fragility of such transmission in any era of persecution. The METABOOK begins with an interpretation of the ‘Union Jack’ as if viewed from the sky, and ends with a ‘Constellation flag’, as seen from the earth. The work proposes a methodology that would allow viewers to visualize the structure of their own bibliographic histories. Decontextualising a utopian conception to the historical value of symbolism within society’s diversity. Mitrentse’s aim to provide an alien’s view of humanities believe systems, proposes the reconstruction of our conceptual mechanisms.
