Xenofon Bitsikas exhibition at Zoumboulakis Gallery
At this moment we are writing these few lines, it takes place the opening of Xenofon Bitsikas solo exhibition at Zoumboulakis Galleries (20 Kolonaki Sq, 10673 Athens). The exhibition called “Precario”, consists of artworks based on two ideas: the conceptual use of collage and the painting as an installation in space. The works are mixed media on paper (charcoal, acrylic, collage) and they refer to the concepts of ephemeral, uncertain, fragile and that of vulnerable.
Bitsika’s quest is always related to the concept of limit and its disruption: transparency, multiple layers and the “back and forth” succession, superposition and concealment are once again central in his work. Working with the ideas of “on-laying” and cutting off, his works function within the limits of painting and installation. In his work the advantageous but static position of the external renaissance observer is replaced by the dynamic condition of the internal observer and by the visual parallax. Paintings become three-dimensional; fragile installations and space-installations result into paintings that unfold and revolve around the observer.
Xenofon Bitsikas exhibition ends on Saturday 25th June 2011.
