From the 30th of September until the 2nd of October 2011 the Yacht Club of Greece will be organising the first Spetses Classic Yacht Race. The race will be a celebration of all the vital aesthetic beauty that Greece brings together. It will feature some of the most renowned classic yachts in Greece using as a backdrop a beautifully preserved historic island town with a naval and shipbuilding tradition which is unequalled in the Mediterranean.

The Spetses Classic Yacht Racing Week is based on the bringing together the diverse yet complimentary elements which make the island of Spetses ideal for inaugurating such a race which hopefully will go on to become a biannual tradition.

The race is planned as a precursor to the International Spetses Classic Yacht Race that will take place biannually from 2012 on. It will feature a mix of tactically intense buoy racing in the pristine classical beauty of the Spetses-Peloponnese channel and short offshore races that intersperse the Costa-Smeralda like. Argolic gulf with the virgin shore line of the surrounding islands. This mix of short offshore racing and buoy racing will help build the foundations of a great classic yacht week.

This race would not have existed if the people of Spetses had not built and bombarded their way to freedom during the Greek war of Independence. These proud seafarers are one of the main causes of Greek Independence and the shipwrights of the island are still at work today building Aegean Classic Schooners locally known as kaiques. In deference to this tradition, a unique feature for a classic yacht race. Aegean Schooners will be racing alongside Classic Yachts. The unique combination of three proud institutions with their common heritage and common classical aesthetics combined with world-class organisation will create a memorable event.
