Katerina Mertzani is presenting her 10th solo exhibition at ABOUT: titled “On the path of good intentions”.

The artist is presenting works on illustrated paper worked with glitter paint and gold dust, using collage from news photographs.

An image of ephemeral and cheap luxury is torn up, interrupted and sacrificed so that it can include and comment on a fragment of reality. This common, known and occasionally unsettling reality is enclosed in a playful and often tender treatment. And inversely, the luxurious yet fragile artistic environment she creates is self-effaced by the appearance of the real one. Opulence and decay, real and virtual, tenderness and irony, coexist accompanied by a tendency for black humor.

The concept behind these works is both imperceptible and suggestive. Are they images with purely artistic intention or skeptical attempts to euphemize the often bitter and prosaic reality we are surrounded by?

Katerina Mertzani studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1969-1974) under Yannis Moralis, stage design under Vassilis Vassiliadis as well as printing. She continued her studies at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

She has held 9 solo exhibitions and has participated in more than 20 group shows in Cleveland (England), in Malme (Sweden), in Paris and in Athens. Her works can be found in public and private collections in Greece and abroad.

She has also been involved in fashion, jewelry and book design. She has been teaching at the VACALO School of Art and Design since 1990.
