Kyriakos Mortarakos at Zoumboulakis Galleries

Zoumboulakis Galleries present the exhibition entitled “Window”, a solo show by Kyriakos Mortarakos from April 11 to May 18, 2013.

Works of various scales revolving around interiors and text writing are presented. Writing in his work is very important not only as a written meaning but also as a plastic value.

The materials he chooses are canvases, MDF, paper, pastel and oil.

His problematic evolves towards the bipolar shape of the notion 'window' which contains the 'interior' and the 'exterior' at the same time. As the artist points out: "I don‟t know what comes first in mind when I think of the word 'window', the 'interior' or the 'exterior'. The coexistence of these opposites fertilizes imagination. There‟s no specific project. The work either constitutes a unity or not. Small or large scale work preserves its autonomy. It declares its reason of existence and based on this declaration, takes its shape".

The Art Historian and Art Critic Haris Savopoulos writes about Kyriakos Mortarakos: "'Writing' is of great importance to Mortarakos! During coffee, in a walk, in moments of relaxation, bent over a paper, he writes. He writes using the primitive movement of the repeated engraving made known by Wols (Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze). He writes with the aggressive retrogression of a child‟s writing, loading tremors of silence and punching, black silences and dramatic intervals of silence on a piece of paper. And his painting was always like that and always will be: A Writing".
