Stathis Alexopoulos, HUBS
A very beautiful sculpture exhibition takes place at the Aethrion Lounge of the Hilton Athens Hotel until the 10th June 2012. Young Greek artist Stathis Alexopoulos takes daily objects and classical themes and converts these into contemporary icons, applying a personal technique, characterized by the supposition of bands and ribbons that mummify his subjects, enclosing memory and form. This woven pattern plays an important role in ancient myths, such as the one created by Penelope awaiting Odysseus’ return, but it also refers to the very contemporary notion of ‘hubs’, the knots formed at the many crossings of the various overlapping bands.
For the Hilton Athens, Stathis Alexopoulos has realized a series of new sculptures, including the formidable Aphrodite, the elegant horse heads and the playful guitar and motorbike. His interest in design is apparent through the application of the sculptures that serve as table legs. Stathis Alexopoulos researches new materials and uses these innovative elements, in this case, to produce metallic surfaces.
Stathis Alexopoulos (born in Athens in 1976) lives and works in Athens. He studied Sculpture at the Panormou School of Fine Arts in Tinos and at the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Fine and Applied Arts. He graduated in 2009. For the last 15 years, he has continuously participated in group shows, international symposia and he has submitted work to national artistic contests, the result of which can be found in various public spaces.
The exhibition is open to the public 24 hours a day and the entrance is free of charge. Curators: Els Hanappe and Lazarus Siakos
