Sand Chair series by Kueng Caputo

Lovis Caputo & Sarah Kueng and since their graduation from the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) they formed Kueng Caputo studio. The design duo currently presents the sand chairs project at Affaire46 gallery during Highly Recommended 1st Collection. Its is a new exhibition concept by Nuria Furrer, which is based on recommendations made by artists and until a collection of five objects by different artists is formed.

Sand Chair series came up during the duo's travel in Jaipur (India) back in January 2011. That's where the first experiments of making a solid object of sand started: Mixing sand, wax, pigments and baking it in the microwave. Back in Zurich they continued the project by searching bigger ovens and trying other material components in different mixtures.

As a result Kueng and Caputo produced a series of sand objects, shown by the gallery Salon94 (NYC) at the FriezeArtFair 2011 in London and Art Basel Miami Beach 2011. The Sand Serie can stand outside resisting all type of weather, as the material is a real stone fake. As they say: "This project exists only thanks to the chance of staying in a place and work right there with the given circumstances. The place is in the object". It is a great way to work and for us the best experience on serveral levels. Starting in an unknown field and to be influenced by people and their knowledge.
