Narrenkastl presents until 30th June 2013, part of the project entitled Finds by Cypriot artist Leontios Toumpouris.

Toumpouris’ research on the Austrian Armouries and traditional embroidery leads him in using drawing to create an archive of images, based on the Archaeological Site Manual published by the Museum of London’s Archaeology Service.

He reinterprets the Manual’s instructions in a way that the methodology is adjusted to the project’s demands. For instance he uses colour and the so called Harris matrix, a method used by archaeologists to view stratigraphic sequences in diagram form, as described in the Manual. The spatial relationship between the “Finds” represented in the drawings is the result of the time they had been “excavated” and the conceptual connections between them as perceived by the artist.

About Narrenkastl

The Austrian word Narrenkastl means to stare into mid-air, lost in one’s thoughts.

Narrenkastl - art off - space is an old window; a glass cabinet in a passage, in the middle of the main square of the small city Frohnleiten in Styria, Austria. Every month an artist is invited to exhibit his/her work. It was founded in May 2011 by Ulli Gollesch, who curates, coordinates and organizes Narrenkastl. 25 international artists have exhibited in Narrenkastl so far.

Since the beginning of 2013 Narrenkastl is collaborating with the Kultur Service Steiermark and the resident artists at Rondo Atelie.
