mimicry chairs by nendo at V&A museum
Japanese design studio nendo during the 10th anniversary of London Design Festival (14 - 23 September 2012) created a contemporary installation for Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK). Nendo’s project was titled Mimicry Chairs and comprised a series of elegant chair installations appearing in varying locations throughout the Museum. nendo mention in their website about the Mimicry Chairs, "We pressed punched metal to create a transparent chair with a seemingly soft back rest, and placed it in the main entrance and ten other locations within the museum including galleries, staircases and corridors. For each location, we modified the chair to mimic the particular space and objects with which it was placed, so that it accords with its environment. We hoped that visitors might discover a new side to the museum's appeal by sitting on different chairs to observe, absorb and appreciate its collection".
Nendo is run by Oki Sato and Akihiro Ito who have completed scores of projects all over the world since their formation in 2002, ranging in scale from small handheld items, lighting and furniture to major exhibition and retail interiors.
