Iliodora Margellos at a.antonopoulou.art gallery
Iliodora Margellos presents her first solo exhibition entitled Fovea at the a.antonopoulou.art gallery on Wednesday 23 January 2013 at 19:00. The title of this series of works was inspired by the anatomical term fovea, a small pit in the eye’s retina which is responsible for sharp central vision.
Through a visual narrative rich in shapes and colours, Iliodora Margellos describes the way in which the viewer receives and recomposes the image through the fovea, as well as the process of pictorially representing this biological function. The term also brings to mind fear (before a brutal and chaotic reality, which the artist’s gaze is able to tame by reorganizing it), as well as Fauvism (which renders visual stimuli through a joyful explosion of colour).
Each work illustrates a group of objects that belong to a particular thematic unit, as the fovea has – according to the artist – chosen, elaborated and delivered to our perception. The start and end point of the exhibition is the installation entitled Scotoma (Blindspot), which brings together all the objects that have been illustrated in the different thematic groups of the works presented in the exhibition.
The spark – and a major source of inspiration – for the young artist was the work of Semir Zeki,Professor of Neurobiology at University College London:
“For Zeki, the art of Cubism, but also art in general, is nothing more than an extension of the function of the brain, i.e. ‘the quest for knowledge in an ever changing world.’ In this sense, the external stimulus is necessary, but is not a factor which constitutes the object of perception. It is a visual disorder that triggers an ‘inner vision,’ organized by the neural network of the visual brain in a truly complex way. During this process, the retina can regulate but not determine the construction of the object of perception.” (Dionysis Kavvathas, “Art as the extension of the function of the brain – The neurobiologist’s paint brush,” “To Vima”, 22.06.2003)
Iliodora Margellos graduated from Yale University with a BA in Art, having initially combined studies in Art and Medicine.
