Maria Yannakaki at Technohoros Art Gallery
Technohoros Art Gallery presents the latest artwork of Maria Yannakaki. Three years since her last solo exhibition in Athens Yannakaki exhibits in March her new series of "love" paintings.
In her paintings the artist uses silk and rice paper, chinese ink, aquarelle, pastel, pencils and stamps. From Chinese painting and calligraphy she studied in China for two years, has maintained the materials, the brushstroke, the balance between the white and the black, and the two-dimensional space. The theme of her paintings, has as epicentre the human figure with pictures that remind us Paul Gauguin or Marc Chagall.
Maria Yannakaki says: "In my new series of paintings that I exhibit at Technohoros Art gallery the main characters are lovers, lovers that are embraced behind bushes, trees, in lakes, having as a spectator a faithful dog, girl portraits with Chinese hats holding their pets. My constant love and reference is the specific and the realistic, without leading this to a storytelling. I get excited with allusions rather than narration. In this axis a very important role plays the Chinese painting and calligraphy term "void not void" "kong bai" i.e. the dynamic relation between void not void in the space. For example, I seek in the girls' or the childrens' portraits to reveal the nature of their face in a sudden way, free and unexpectedly."
Maria Yannakaki was born in Piraeus. She studied painting from 1977 to 1982 in the Athens School of Fine Arts with Panos Tetsis. For two years (1980-1982) she attended mosaic classes under the supervision of G. Kolefa. In 1983 she was granted a fellowship to do a Master's in traditional Chinese painting. She has presented her work in more than 20 solo exhibitions in Greece, China, Germany, Belgium, India, Italy, Luxembourg, Sweden and the United States. She participated in International Ink and Wash Painting Exhibition (Beijing 1988), the 8th Triennale of New Delhi (India 1994), the Art Athina, the Riparte Fair (Rome 1996), the MiArt (Milan 2003) as well as the Beijing Ιnternational Biennale (2005).
